Crates are packaged modules that were added in the 0.6.0.0 "basebuilding update". Crates come in tier-1 and tier-2 variations and always contain modules one tier higher than itself. Crates can be deployed like habitats. Their main purpose is for compartmentalization of modules in order to save time and provide more freedom when constructing bases.
A tier-1 crate can be created by using a small fabricator and a tier-2 crate can be created by using a medium fabricator.
Crates containing modules other than platforms must be placed on a platform before you can deploy them.
