Filters are a "consumable" item that can be used in a pinch to save your life by providing you with Oxygen. They are similar to Power Cells in the way that they work. Filters can be crafted from the Backpack once Researched.

Usage

  • Filters, once fabricated from the backpack printer, will immediately produce Oxygen to fill any connected Small Oxygen Tanks starting with the primary backpack tank, and then sequentially filling any secondary Tanks.
  • A stack of filters holds 4 filters which individually hold 145 seconds of air, for a total of 580 seconds (9 minutes 40 seconds).
  • A filter will continuously operate for 80 seconds before entirely evaporating, whether O2 is at 100% or not, unless attached to tethers or disconnected from the backpack.
  • A filter will fill up to eight Small Oxygen Tanks before expiring, unless less room is available to fill oxygen into.

Trivia

  • Though whether it is a bug or not is uncertain, filters decay while attached to the Backpack whether or not Oxygen is completely full, reducing their effective Oxygen output to 20~ seconds per each visible filter subdivision. Consequently, the only known method at the present time to get the full complement of Oxygen is to carry a Filter in the air or attached to a platform or other slot as one walks around so that it isn't plugged in, and to only wear it when Oxygen is <100%.
  • The blue lamp in the center of the filter switches on and off depending on whether the player is currently tethered to Oxygen, signifying whether it is decaying or not. It becomes stuck if unplugged.
  • Oxygen in Astroneer cannot simultaneously increment and decrement, and consequently while Oxygen is filling up, no Oxygen is actually being consumed. As a result, the 80 seconds a filter spends incrementing Oxygen add to its effective total oxygen production by 80 seconds of breathable air, causing each filter to hold precisely 11 minutes and 0 seconds of air.
