Hello all editors and users of the Astroneer Wiki! We are in the process of updating and switching over to use the new Fandom Desktop skin on the wiki. There will be many changes over the coming days, but the main goal is to keep the wiki feeling the same, as much as we can! Tethers are an oxygen transfer item in Astroneer that can be crafted via the backpack. It is an essential item to have throughout your playthrough, especially in early exploration.

  • To place a tether, press T or Xbox One - D-Pad Down to drop a tether at the player's feet. The tether can then be dragged into the desired position and can cling to walls or ceilings. Note that tethers must simply be within distance of each other to connect; they do NOT need line of sight with each other.
  • A tether line will be created between two tether posts that are close enough. When dragging a tether, a transparent dotted line will show to which tether the new one will be connected to when released (if any).
  • Tether lines will be blue when connected to an oxygen source or dashed blue/yellow when power is also flowing toward a player.
  • When the tethers are not connected to any base or vehicle that has an oxygenator attached to it, the tether lines will be black. In that case, the player won't get oxygen or power from them.
  • Vehicles can link to tethers when an oxygenator is placed on the vehicle. They will act as a source of oxygen only, unless the vehicle has a power source. If the player runs out of power while tethered to a vehicle, the vehicle's internal power will begin to feed to the player without recharging their equipment.
  • Only the player can recharge their power through a tether. Vehicles and bases will not receive power. However, one can charge a Small Battery and then place it onto the vehicle/base that needs power.
  • Once placed, tethers can be picked up again and put back in a tether stack (or empty slot, thereby creating a tether stack) by clicking on the stack in the backpack. Shift-left-clicking (on keyboard) or pressing Xbox One - Y Button (on Xbox) on a tether while holding it will automatically return it to the backpack, assuming there is space for it.

    • Festive Light Tethers added until end of the year (2019).
    • Fixed a bug involving tethers that caused performance to degrade for clients in multiplayer games.
  • Release Patch  Patch 1.6.49:
    • Fixed a bug where tethers would occasionally cause performance degradation for clients in multiplayer games.
    • Tethers will now connect to all 4 sides of the large curved platform.

    • The last tether in a bundle is now placed as expected.

    • Tethers that were previously disappearing are now spawned in the air next to the player and drop to the ground.

    • Tether lines are now connecting correctly to the Tall Platform and Medium Platform C.

    • Changed the algorithm that drives placement of new tethers in a network to reduce hitches and increase performance.

    • New games now start with Tethers unlocked by default.

    • Fixed a longstanding bug where Tether lines did not go dark in Multiplayer games when disconnected from an Oxygen source.
  • Alpha Patch  Patch 0.6.2:
    • Fixed and added guards against crashes resulting from the array of connections while regenerating and merging Tether networks
  • Pre-Alpha Patch  Patch 221:
    • Fixed a Multiplayer issue where Tether lines would not go dark for Client players when they were disconnected from an oxygen source.
  • Pre-Alpha Patch  Patch 201:
    • Pressing the “place tether” button will now place a Tether post at the Astroneer’s feet. The post can be moved around after that point.
    • Tether posts now physically simulate and fall to the ground when deforming terrain under them.
    • Fixed a bug where Tethers were not auto-highlighting for selection when playing with a controller.
  • Pre-Alpha Patch  Patch 199:
    • The sound of oxygen being replenished no longer persists when disconnecting from the oxygen tether before the tank has fully recharged.

    • Fix tethers disappearing on quick-stow if top-left backpack bundle is full.
    • Fix tethers not being placeable while sprinting.
